Museum Collections and Registration Technician
Overview:
The Museum Collections and Registration Technician assists with the performance of museum curatorial and registration functions in the management of fine art and material culture object collections and support activities.
Tasks:
Assists with the cataloging and data entry of temporary and permanent object records in the museum’s collection information system. Assists in the handling, maintenance and care as well as in the installation and de-installation of sensitive museum objects for temporary and permanent exhibition. Assists in the preparation of objects for exhibition (matting, framing, mounting and buffering.) Properly packs and prepares objects for transport. Participates in daily gallery check. Monitors light levels and condition of objects on view. May represent the museum to collectors, colleague institutions and to the public. May act as courier for museum objects as needed.
Knowledge:
Bachelor’s degree in art history, art studio, museum studies, or related field and at least 1 year of museum experience. Must have knowledge of museum collection management; proper object handling, storage, packing of museum objects; knowledge of basic research methods and materials as well as related curatorial functions.
Skills:
Excellent organizational skills. Excellent balance and manual dexterity. Excellent verbal, typing and writing skills. Excellent computer skills and database experience. Proofreading experience desired.

Ability to work in a team environment. Ability to think creatively to solve problems. The ability to communicate information and ideas effectively in speech and in writing. Ability to perform basic math calculations. Excellent spatial and visual abilities. The ability to listen and understand abstract information and ideas. The ability to match or detect differences between colors. The ability to see details at close range. Ability to identify and use equipment and materials appropriately.
Work Activities:
Create detailed and accurate object records, documents and labels. Perform basic research using historical files, records, documents, publications and other relevant sources. Provide documentation, detailed instructions, drawings, or specifications. Use hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials. Organize team members to work together on specific projects. Develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish the work. Estimate sizes, distances, and quantities, determining time, costs, resources and materials needed.
Work Context:
Requires working indoors in office and museum environments. Requires leading others in accomplishing work activities. Requires considerable time communicating by phone, e-mail, and face-to-face. Requires sensitivity and discretion. Responsible for staying within budget. Requires accuracy and exactness in the performance of duties. Requires considerable time sitting and standing for 2-3 hours at a time. Requires the climbing of stairs and lifting objects up to 75 pounds. |
