Description: The Sioux City Art Center, an accredited art museum, seeks a curator committed to implementing the Art Center’s strategic plan including: raising the visibility of Art Center with major exhibitions appealing to broad audiences; positioning the Art Center as a regional educational resource by researching and more fully utilizing its Permanent Collection; working with education liaison to develop educational materials related to the Permanent Collection for classroom application; and, communicating effectively in writing and verbally to provide visitors with an accessible and meaningful experience in the visual arts. In addition, the curator, under the supervision of the director, proposes and oversees temporary exhibitions of local, upper Midwestern and nationally recognized artists. The curator must be able to work collaboratively with both volunteers, and staff. Salary range is $43,000 - $60,000 plus benefits.

Requirements: Masters Degree in art history or art, or closely related field, required with experience in an art museum or educational institution or equivalent experience. Excellent verbal and written skills are essential. Must have examples of writing on art and be a confident public speaker. Curator must be able to work cooperatively with other departments.

The Sioux City Art Center is an accredited art museum located in Sioux City, Iowa. In 2006, Sioux City was named one of three Great Places, Great Spaces by the State of Iowa.

The Art Center is housed in a signature facility designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The 45,800 square foot building features four exhibition galleries with a combined total of 8,000 square feet.  In 2005, the Art Center Association purchased adjacent land for future expansion.

The Art Center is a model public/private partnership between the City of Sioux City and Art Center Association of Sioux City, each contributing approximately one-half of the Art Center’s annual budget of $1.3 million. The Art Center’s staff consists of ten (10) full-time and five (5) part-time employees with additional professional support provided by the City. 
The exhibition program is dedicated to excellence and balance, focusing on area, regional and nationally recognized artists, as well as major traveling exhibitions that raise the Art Center’s visibility while broadening its audience. 


The Art Center’s Permanent Collection is currently focused on artists with significant links to the upper Midwest and works on paper by nationally and internationally recognized artists. A major goal of the Art Center is to continue its current ambitious exhibition program while building and utilizing its Permanent Collection.
