Membership Marketing: Strategic Planning For Success

05/11/2009

In this economic climate, all museums and cultural organizations are being faced with the challenge of doing even more with even less.  Competition for audiences and donors is greater than ever.  Expectations for programs and meaningful special events are higher than ever, and the current economic climate means that many potential visitors hesitate before spending money on cultural activities.  At the same time, many people are vacationing at home, giving local museums and attractions renewed attention.

How do museums and other membership-based organizations take advantage of this opportunity?  One of the ways is to focus on membership development.

On May 11and 12, the Iowa Museum Association will bring Dana Hines, one of this nation’s leading experts on membership development, to Des Moines for a two-day workshop.  Dana is President of Membership Consultants, Inc., a company that won 25 Direct Marketing Arrow Awards from 1991-2003, including 5 “Best of Show” First Place Awards.  Dana presented this workshop several years ago and received great reviews from attendees.

Her two-day workshop is an intensive training course for membership managers at all levels—from beginning level to seasoned professionals. (Agenda attached.) Topics covered include:

·        membership acquisition
·        renewals
·        on-site sales
·        telemarketing
·        dues and benefits
·        customer service in membership
·        technology and membership
·        the membership product.

With the support of our funding partner, the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, the cost of the workshop will be $85.  (This workshop usually costs $495 per person.)  The fee covers registration and lunches for the two days.

This workshop is designed for all organizations that have members—human service organizations, cultural organizations, etc.  Please send this information to anyone you think may benefit.  See you at Living History Farms Conference Center!
