CIVIL WAR VETS HONORED

Here in the Midwest, we tend to think that the Civil War as a long- ago-and-far-away event. But the reality of it was a large factor in the lives of our forefathers.

That will be evident June 12 in a cemetery tour produced by the Brooklyn Historical Society, titled "Comrades in Blue & Grey: Brooklyn's Civil War Veterans & Their Wives."

The event at the Brooklyn Cemetery will recognize some of the 100 Civil War veterans who are buried there, in recognition of the upcoming 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War in 1861. Both Union and Confederate soldiers will be honored.

Uniformed cast members will share the poignant stories of 22 soldiers who participated in what many called the "War Between the States." The playing of "Taps" will conclude the tour.

Brooklyn historian Richard Johnston of Iowa City researched the veterans’ histories, and wrote a new script for the tour narrative. Previously he wrote a tour script about Brooklyn’s pioneers, which has been produced by BHS four times.

Tour chairman Mary Jo Thompson announced that there will be two showings of the tour, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. She added that earlier BHS cemetery tours have been sold-out events. To reserve a ticket for this popular Flag Day event, contact Bev Rens via email, bevrens@mail.com, or 641-522-7869.
