Community partnerships are an essential ingredient for successfully managing today’s museums. Partnerships between local educators and museum educators build curriculum-sensitive enrichment and outreach programs for the benefit of students of all ages. Partnerships between community main street or chamber organizations and museums lead to tourist-attracting designations such as “Cultural and Entertainment Districts” or “Great American Main Streets.” Partnerships with community volunteers bring necessary assistance to under-staffed museums and rewarding work for caring volunteers. Partnerships with community foundations, tourism entities, and city government lead to successful grant applications which enable the important work of the museum to go forward. The list could go on – museums partner with farmer’s markets, musicians, artists, community service groups and clubs – and all these partnerships enrich both organizations and the community they serve.
The theme for the 2010 Iowa Museum Association Conference is “Celebrating Community Partnerships.” The conference itself is being planned by a coalition of community leaders from community organizations including history, art, education, and local government. This diversity has brought a wide range of ideas and interests to the planning and will ultimately strengthen and broaden what the conference offers its attendees.
Proposals (in the form of outlines) are now being accepted for the 2010 Iowa Museum Association Annual Meeting and Conference. Outlines for classes, roundtables, or seminars should clearly state (1) how the proposed session fits the 2010 conference theme or (2) if they are skills-based proposals. Please specify a proposed format (lecture, power point, hands-on, round table, etc.), note any hardware or software you would require, and the proposed length of your presentation. If you have partners or speakers in mind for a roundtable or panel, please include their names and titles. Those with outlines which are accepted for development will be notified by April 1, 2010.
Outlines may be submitted via e-mail to Cyndi Sweet, Executive Director, Iowa Museum Association at imasweet@cfu.net by Tuesday, March 9, 2010.
