Professional Development SMALL MUSEUM CONVENING
A small museum may be volunteer run or have paid staff members. It may have a small budget or be in a small community. However you define “small” is valid and you are welcome here.
This Small Museum Convening is provided by the Iowa Museum Association Field Services and Mentoring Committee, Jared McDonald and Nathan Buman, co-chairs. For more information contact

8:30- 9:00 a.m. registration. Snacks and coffee will be available.
9:15 – 10:15 a.m. Establishing a Direction without a Director
Speaker: Kathy Klehr is currently the director of a county museum, the Scott County History Museum, in Minnesota. She has experience as a volunteer director for a local civic organization, as well as serving on various museum and community service boards. Kathy has conducted planning sessions for a variety of organizations, as well as given workshops at state conferences. She serves as adviser to a new volunteer historical society, assisting them in all aspects of organization and planning.

Speaker: Jennifer Kovarik, Registrar and Youth Educator, Vesterheim Museum, Decorah, Iowa.
Jennifer Kovarik is Vesterheim Museum’s registrar and youth educator. She holds a B.A. in history and English from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, and an M.A.T. in elementary education from Hastings College, Hastings, Nebraska. In addition to researching, documenting, and sharing Vesterheim’s collections, she oversees the museum’s archives and library collections, curates exhibitions, directs and teaches many of Vesterheim’s successful school-age programs, and is staff liaison to several museum trustee committees, including strategic planning. During her 18 years at Vesterheim, she has also been involved with coordinating and facilitating annual events, folk art classes, Elderhostel programs, and tours to Norway.
