This is
a full-time, 40 hours weekly, position with the Department of Education. For

The
museum, one of several programs of the South Dakota State Historical Society,
a full-service state historical society, located at the South Dakota Cultural
Heritage Center in Pierre, moves history forward with the rich heritage and
complex history of South Dakota. The museum provides a regular program of
exhibits, educational programming, and outreach programs, such as mobile
education kits. The museum has a comprehensive collection of over 35,000
artifacts.
Now is

its 1989 Cultural Heritage Center! Duties may alter during the revitalization
period. After the project completes the position’s focus will return to the
following:
The
full-time Curator of Exhibits (CE) assists the Museum Director and
collaborates with the Curator of Collections and Curator of Interpretation to
plan, design, fabricate, and install visitor-oriented museum exhibitions. The
CE is the team leader in the exhibit development process, including research,
graphic design, creating models, and label writing. The CE works with the
team, consultants, or other project partners. Job functions are not limited
to:
- The Curator of Exhibits moves history forward by
developing all exhibits through the Museum of the South Dakota State
Historical Society. The CE will maintain current exhibits and shops;
guide concept development; and conduct research and fabrication; while
ensuring label writing, installation, copyright, licensing, and
contracts are properly executed.
- The Curator of Exhibits will coordinate the museum’s
various social media channels and update, maintain, recommend, and
support technology.
- The Curator of Exhibits represents the South Dakota
State Historical Society to other South Dakota history organizations,
professional associations, and the public.
This
position does not have the option to work remotely. Start date is negotiable.
The
Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A Bachelor’s Degree in History or a related field, with Master’s preferred,
and three-five years of museum experience. Experience using various forms of
technology and social media platforms.
Knowledge,
Skills, and Abilities:
- skill to collaborate and be an effective
communicator;
- problem-solving skills;
- knowledge of design software (InDesign, Illustrator,
Photoshop, etc.);
- ability to use Microsoft Office products;
- ability to lift 25 pounds;
- knowledge of basic carpentry practices;
- familiarity with tools and other shop equipment.
