Education and Outreach Coordinator Job Description
The Johnson County Historical Society is a private, non-profit group committed to serving the public by furthering an appreciation of the historical and cultural heritage of the Johnson County community through education, preservation and interpretation.
Overview:
This part-time position (20 hours/week) reports and works closely with the Executive Director to create and implement high-quality, mission-centered educational programming for all ages. The Education and Outreach Coordinator collaborates with other museums, libraries, governments, and educational institutions to partner and promote common educational offerings. Some evening/weekend work is required. This position pays $15/hour, eligible for benefits, and offers room for advancement.
Job Description:
The Education & Outreach Coordinator at JCHS is a key role within the Johnson County Historical Society. The Education & Outreach Coordinator at JCHS is responsible for public relations and correspondence, program development, and assists with volunteer content creation and management. Similarly, the Education & Outreach Coordinator is directly responsible for many other projects and programs that fall outside the areas outlined below.
Job Specific Tasks:
Public Relations
i. Public relations coordinator working with social media consultant to maximize the amount of public exposure for JCHS and JCHS programs with a cost-effective emphasis.
ii. Responsible for all press release circulation through approved outlets.
iii. Acts as a public outreach liaison.
Program Development & Management
i. Coordinate, schedule, and provide tours for the JCHS Heritage Museum, the Johnson County Historic Poor Farm, the 1876 Coralville Schoolhouse and Old Town Hall. Work with staff and volunteers to facilitate tours.
ii. Manage Be a Guest of the Past program at the 1876 Coralville Schoolhouse.
iii. Schedule and liaison with outside presenters.
iv. Work with other community organizations to develop collaborative programming within JCHS facilities as well as outside community programs.
v. Develop, conduct, and track program and tour attendance and evaluations.
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience Requirements:
The ideal candidate should be creative, self-directed, organized, with strong writing and communication skills. The candidate should have an enthusiastic and outgoing personality, outstanding organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong interpersonal skills, the ability to relate history in an interesting manner, and an ability to accurately promote the JCHS mission, programs, and historic sites. Proficiency in PastPerfect Museum Software is a plus, but not required.
