Collections Care Workshops
 
Offered the first Friday of each month, just two workshops remain in our popular Collections Care series. No prerequisites required.

These workshops are intended for: registrars, curators, collections managers, archivists, university students, board members, and volunteers.

Workshop: Writing Condition Reports

Location: Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN
Condition reporting is a central part of collections record keeping. This half-day workshop will introduce the basics of art and artifact documentation for outgoing loans, new acquisitions, and damage reports, etc. The class will cover a wide range of materials and artifact types and introduce a selection of simple examination tools. Participants will learn how to approach each object with objectivity and consistence.

Workshop: Health & Safety: Hazardous Materials in Your Collection
August 4th, 2017

Location: Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN

Instruction in this half-day workshop will cover health and safety for staff and volunteers of cultural institutions, including appropriate safety equipment and OSHA requirements. Collection hazards covered will range from toxic materials to excessive weight, explosives, asbestos, and weapons. The safe handling, storage and exhibition of toxic and dangerous artifacts will be discussed, and proper storage and labeling will be reviewed and emphasized. Management of arsenic and other pesticides in collections will be addressed, and a component of the workshop will include information on arsenic testing.
