Animals Among Us
An invitation asking the citizens of Iowa to explore the world of the
animals around them prompted this traveling exhibit. Men, women, and
children from across the state competed to have their favorite animal
related photographs and personal essays on the subject included in this
14 full color banner display.
The beauty of
this exhibit is that it is compact enough to travel effortlessly to all
four corners of our farmland state. The display is available to all
venues, free of charge, willing to agree to transport the banners to the
next exhibition site, following the completion of the scheduled viewing
period.
The Obermann
Animal Studies Group, supported by the University of Iowa Presidential
Year of Public Engagement Grant and the Obermann Center for Advanced
Studies, held two statewide essay-photography contests to encourage
Iowans to study the relationship between people and animals they come
into contact with.
By asking Iowans
to document the Animals Among Us, the exhibit hopes to prompt people to
discuss the many quality of life issues that animals and humans share.
These topics include environmental quality, urban/rural
interdependence, public health and safety, farming practices, law and
government, civic responsibilities, and the care and management of
animals. Downloadable pdfs regarding each exhibit can be accessed from
